Mechanical Maintenance of 6-Axis Robot in Packaging Line

This project involved the on-site mechanical inspection and corrective maintenance of a 6-axis industrial robot operating in a high-cycle packaging environment. The client reported irregular movement, vibration through one axis and a noticeable loss of consistency during repetitive handling tasks.

The objective was to identify the mechanical source of the issue, restore stable movement and return the robot to reliable service without interfering with the client’s software or production programming.

Site / Application

The robot was installed on an automated packaging line handling repetitive pick-and-place duties. The application required accurate movement, consistent repeatability and minimal disruption to surrounding production equipment.

Scope of Work

The work : included

  • On-site mechanical inspection
  • Joint and axis condition review
  • Bearing and movement assessment
  • Backlash and gearbox-related checks
  • Fastener inspection and mechanical re-torque where required
  • Alignment correction
  • General hardware troubleshooting
  • Reassembly and mechanical verification

Challenges

The site required a practical solution that would restore confidence in the robot’s mechanical condition without creating extended downtime. Mechanical wear was affecting movement quality, but the robot still needed to remain part of an active production environment.

Work Completed

Mechanical checks were carried out across the affected axis and surrounding components. Wear-related issues were identified, critical mechanical points were addressed, and corrective work was completed to improve movement stability and reduce the risk of further deterioration.

The work focused strictly on hardware condition, physical alignment and mechanical performance.

Outcome

The robot was returned to a more stable operating condition, with improved movement confidence and reduced concern around immediate mechanical failure. The client was able to continue using the robot with greater confidence in the hardware side of the system.
